While some may be skeptical of Pro Football Focus numbers and metrics, one Big 12 defender recently earned praise as one of the nation’s highest-graded returners.
Texas Tech’s David Bailey took home the honor of being listed as the nation’s highest-graded pass rusher with a PFF grade of 90.9.

Bailey elected to transfer to Texas Tech this offseason after three seasons at Stanford. In his career with the Cardinal, the California native recorded 111 total tackles, 14.5 sacks, and seven forced fumbles.
“Long, athletic pass rusher with unlimited upside,” 247Sports’ Greg Biggins wrote about Bailey. “A natural pass rusher who’s explosive off the edge, uses his hands well, and has very good closing speed. He’s a naturally strong kid who can bull rush an opposing tackle or beat him with sheer speed. He’s versatile enough to drop in coverage and can break down in space. He’s an excellent open field tackler and has the athleticism to run down plays from behind. He has a college body right now and is still just scratching the surface of how good he can be, as he’s still a relative newcomer to football. When you look at his frame, natural athletic ability, toughness, and motor, there aren’t many players in the ’22 class with more long-term potential.”
He was one of the nation’s top transfers in 2025, and his numbers on 247Sports reflected that. Bailey was listed as a four-star prospect, the 12th-best player available, and the third-ranked available player at his position.
Bailey and the Red Raiders are set to kick off the 2025 season on Saturday, August 30th, vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
