Racing 92 pulled through early setbacks and a red card to clinch a 43-40 win over Connacht in a pulsating Challenge Cup quarter-final at Dexcom Stadium.
Connacht had an impressive start in the game with Bundee Aki’s opener and JJ Hanrahan’s accurate conversions, and they furthered their advantage when a high tackle by Connacht’s Wame Naituvi resulted in a penalty try and later a red card.
Racing 92 responded swiftly with Cian Prendergast using the pressure with clinical finishes, and a quick score from Diego Escobar and Nolann Le Garrec added the points to narrow the gap to 28-24 by halftime.
Despite being reduced in numbers, Racing responded to the setback by scoring eight tries in the first 40 minutes, which saw a fast-paced exchange of tries.
However, Connacht’s early dominance did not last long in the second half, as Racing’s resolve was evident in the match. Maximizing on strategic penalty kicks from Dan Lancaster and a subsequent one from Nolann Le Garrec, the visitors regain control. A drop goal from former England international Owen Farrell tightened the contest, further narrowing Connacht’s advantage.
In an attempt to regain control, Connacht’s Ben Murphy and Cathal Forde registered two tries, briefly reviving their hopes. Yet, despite their efforts, they couldn’t neutralize the surging momentum of Racing.
As the final exchanges unfolded, Racing 92, with just 13 men in the field, managed to secure the ball for the last minute of the contest, securing their place in the Challenge Cup semi-finals against Lyon and leaving Connacht with lingering regrets and a missed chance at the Challenge Cup.
