A winless preseason is certainly not an ill omen for the Las Vegas Raiders.
The Raiders did get to see their starters perform at a high level, and a few players worked their way from the roster bubble to create some interesting decisions on Tuesday. For the preseason, that is all the Raiders could ask for out of their squad. Everything is all in preparation to get the team ready for when they head off to face the New England Patriots to kick off the regular season.
However, there is a trend that comes with the preseason that might leave fans somewhat concerned about Raiders head coach Pete Carroll this season.
According to Josh Dubow of the Associated Press, the Raiders have had four winless preseasons prior to 2025, and the head coaches of those teams have been fired either during or after the regular season.
Winless preseasons in #Raiders history:
1989 (Mike Shanahan fired after 4 games of season)
2011 (Hue Jackson fired after season)
2017 (Jack Del Rio fired after season)
2024 (Antonio Pierce fired after season)
2025 (Pete Carroll ???)— Josh Dubow (@JoshDubowAP) August 24, 2025
Now, it is unlikely that Carroll is dealing with this short of a leash, and there is virtually no way fans will call for a change if the team does not perform to expectations.
However, Carroll will be the oldest coach in the NFL this season, so a poor season could lead to him mulling retirement. Even that possibility, however, is unlikely with how energetic Carroll has looked throughout training camp and the preseason.
Carroll is a near-lock to break this trend this season, but it is something to think about.
