Randy Mazey Presented with Retirement Gift from Marshall

Barring the potential for a postseason matchup, this is the third and final time WVU and Marshall will face off on the diamond this season, making it the final chapter of the rivalry for Mazey’s career. Mazey has established himself as a vocal advocate for the Mountain State during his time with WVU, making it easy to see the cause for mutual respect between the two programs.

“The community has been so good to me and my family, we’ve kind of ingrained ourselves in this community,” Randy Mazey said during his introductory press conference to begin the 2024 season. “All I’ll tell you about my decision is that I did it in the best interest of this baseball program, this university, this state, all the things that I’ve grown to love so much.”

Despite the celebratory mood at the start of the game, Marshall ended up with the last laugh on Mazey and WVU, winning 3-2 in extra innings on Wednesday night. But Mazey’s Mountaineers still own an 18-5 record against the Thundering Herd during his tenure in Morgantown, which began ahead of the 2013 season. While it’s all respect between the in-state rivals, it isn’t hard to imagine that Marshall will be relieved to see him call it a career.
