It's that time of year again! 247Sports has just revealed their next crop of five star recruits heading into the summer for the 2025 college football recruiting class. There were several new faces in the mix. But the name at the top remained the same. However, this time with a bit more controversy as to whether he should truly be there.

According to 247Sports, Bryce Underwood--LSU Football's top quarterback commit for next year--is still the number one overall player in the nation! The top five was rounded out by Tavien St. Clair (Ohio State QB commit), David Sanders Jr. (uncommitted OT), Devin Sanchez (Ohio State CB commit), and Dakorien Moore who just decommitted from LSU.

Bryce Underwood controversial number one recruit?

247Sports' top recruiting analysts Andrew Ivins and Cooper Petagna spent significant time breaking down all 32 of the top five stars heading into the summer, but when it came to Bryce Underwood, they seemed much less sure about his presence at the top this time around. Andrew Ivins had this to say on the matter:

"There were some conversations about maybe making Tavien St. Clair the top guy and that's because Bryce Underwood...our last exposure point to him was that Division I State Title Game up in Michigan Thanksgiving weekend. I thought his final drive of the year left a lot to be desired. [He] had a chance to play hero. He wasn't..."

Apparently there were members of the 247Sports rating group that really considered Tavien St. Clair--one of the fastest rising recruits in the nation--as the number one overall player. St. Clair is a phenomenal quarterback, so he's certainly a name to watch as the Elite 11 and other premier recruiting events continue throughout this summer.

Bryce Underwood continues offseason dominance

Despite the slight controversy at the top, Bryce Underwood has done more than enough at other events this spring to maintain his top overall status. Ivins mentioned this as well as he heaped praise upon Underwood:

"The past month he's been the alpha dog at two different events. He is 40-2. He's thrown 120 touchdown passes. That's the most out of any quarterback we have charted here in the 2025 cycle."

It's true. Everywhere Underwood has stepped onto a football field, even beyond his official high school football games, he has been thoroughly impressive. Just check out how he easily dominated at OT7 flag football, showing the world why he's considered such an elite talent:

There's still one more season of football to play, and Underwood is getting some company at the top of rankings boards now with a few other quarterbacks and wide receivers continuing to emerge as truly elite talents. Still, Bryce Underwood certainly looks like a number one overall recruit in the nation. And until he falters at a major event or in meaningful games this fall he should stay ranked at the top.
