The Miami Dolphins and rookie quarterback Quinn Ewers have agreed to a four-year contract, according to Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network. Ewers will be under contract ahead of rookie minicamp.
The Dolphins selected Quinn Ewers in the seventh round (No. 231 overall) in this year’s NFL Draft. It was surprising to see the former Texas Longhorns quarterback drop in the draft as he was projected to be at least a third-round pick.
“I just didn’t know what was going on,” Ewers, 22, told ESPN two days after the draft. “But, I mean, it was nice [to get drafted], because at one point I’m like, ‘I’m not even going to get drafted. I’m going to go undrafted.’
“It was very unexpected, and I think that the toughest part about it is just the amount of unexpected occurrences there were. But I’m glad that I ended up where I ended up. To go as late as I did, I’m glad it’s a good spot.”
Ewers was the final quarterback taken in the draft, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a future with the Dolphins or in the NFL. After Miami selected Ewers, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel explained why being a rookie helps him.
“That is beneficial because you can evaluate a lot of nuances that you typically have to forecast,” McDaniel said, per Sports Illustrated. “I think one of the things that gives him an advantage as a rookie, just getting started, is that overlap. I think the way that he orchestrates the offense from the motion timing and really anticipating things, there’s a fit there, so we’re excited to get him in the program and start working.”
Ewers spent one season at Ohio State and the next three years at Texas. Last year, the Texas native played in 14 games and completed 65.8 percent of his passes for 3,472 yards, 31 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Ewers was named to the All-SEC Second Team and led Texas to a College Football Playoff semifinals.
