During Gamescom Opening Night Live, so many game trailers and reveals dropped, and my personal favorite was the new preview trailer of Resident Evil Requiem, the upcoming installment of the Resident Evil series. The series is incredibly popular for its iconic characters, expansive world-building, and intricate lore that has been developing for almost 30 years. The trailer dropped incredible gameplay footage, and here is a review of what was shown.
The Resident Evil series isn’t necessarily known for its horror, but its action-packed sequences and badass characters like Jill and Leon. However, another way in which developers are bringing the game back to its roots is the suspenseful horror we loved in 2. Just from watching the trailer, we got that sense of terror from seeing the new stalker enemy, to actually seeing Grace’s perspective of the nightmare she is living. It’s scary as hell, and I’m living for it.
Grace Ashcroft joins the lineup of our hero protagonists and is leading a fresh new generation for the Resident Evil series. She is the daughter of Alyssa Ashcroft, a main protagonist of the spin-off series Resident Evil: Outbreak. We find out that Alyssa dies during the trailer and that Grace, becoming an FBI tech analyst, goes back to the ruins of Raccoon City, specifically the place where her mother was murdered.
Grace is such a different character from the heroic badasses we are used to. She has almost no experience with the infected and is easily frightened, very reminiscent of Ashley Graham in RE4 or Rebecca Chambers, specifically in RE Zero. From the trembling in her hand when holding the lighter (her only light source), to her shaky breaths, we hear every step she takes, it’s so immersive and scary, and a great way to feel that RE 2 vibe outside of a modern remake. The devs expressed that they wanted Grace to feel as relatable to players as possible, which is a refreshing way to revamp and pay homage to the series’ 30th anniversary.
There has been a lot of speculation as to whether characters from previous games will make an appearance or if there will be split protagonist gameplay featuring these characters. It’s unclear whether this will happen or not, but I know fans won’t object to this type of feature gameplay. This will definitely bring things full circle if we get to see Leon or Claire.
The trailer dropped some major bombs and established a new story within the Resident Evil timeline. It’s refreshing, innovative, so god damn immersive, and scary as hell, it’s my most anticipated game of next year. I hope players will feel what I do and appreciate how hard the devs of RE have worked to bring this game to life. Resident Evil Requiem is set to release on February 27 on all platforms, and I can’t wait to see players’ response to this installment.
