Revealed: The reason why Nico Paz rejected a move to Tottenham this summer

Tottenham Hotspur have been on the lookout for a new attacking midfielder since the beginning of the summer transfer window but none of their attempts thus far have resulted in something fruitful.

It all started with Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White. Spurs triggered his release clause, and the player agreed on a move to North London, but the Tricky Trees threatened legal action for illegally contacting their captain. Eventually, the Englishman ended up signing a new contract at Forest.

One other player that Spurs tried to sign this summer was Eberechi Eze. The club had reached an agreement with him over a potential transfer and were in negotiations with Palace, only for Arsenal to hijack the deal in the eleventh hour.

Tottenham and a summer of rejections

Another rejection that Tottenham seem to have faced this summer is from Nico Paz. Although Como revealed that they had not received any bid for the player, it seems like the player shut down Spurs’ approach for him.

Now, as per Fichajes, the reason Paz turned down a move to the N17 this summer is because he has a long-term plan to wear the Real Madrid jersey. He intends to continue at Como for a season and then play the World Cup for Argentina.

Having come through the Castilla, though, he then wants to move to Real Madrid. Los Blancos still have a lot of control over the player’s future. They have a very favourable buy-back clause next summer and would be a great addition to Xabi Alonso’s squad.

Madrid-bound Argentinian starlet

Madrid still retain 50% of the rights on the player and also have a €10m buy-back clause. Paz has been one of the Serie A names to watch out for over the past year and has started the 2025/26 season in top form.

From a Tottenham perspective, the pursuit of Paz was always bound to be a very tricky deal. A potential transfer not only depended on the player and Como but also Real Madrid. Surely, the Spanish club must have provided some sort of indication that is prompting the Italian club to reject the offer.

With just a few days left in the transfer market, Spurs need to make a decision on their #10 target. None of their preferred targets so far have transpired into moves and let’s wait and see what the next few days holds for them in this regard.
