RG3 Makes Dramatic Statement About ‘Fairness’ of Shedeur Sanders

Robert Griffin III has inserted himself into the conversation about the Cleveland Browns’ quarterback competition, arguing that rookie Shedeur Sanders was not given a fair opportunity against Dillon Gabriel.

Griffin delivered his message in a video posted to social media while wearing his old Browns jersey, adding a statement that quickly drew national attention.

“Shedeur Sanders was never given equal opportunity to compete with Dillon Gabriel, and the Browns showed us that throughout training camp and the preseason,” Griffin said. “If it were a real competition, Dillon and Shedeur would have played with the same talent around them in the last game.”

Sanders, a fifth-round draft pick out of Colorado and the son of Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, struggled in his final preseason outing. He completed 3 of 6 passes for 14 yards and was sacked five times in a performance that highlighted concerns about Cleveland’s offensive depth chart. The Browns released several of the linemen who played with Sanders during that game, fueling speculation that the rookie did not receive adequate support in his audition.

Gabriel, the former Oklahoma quarterback, enters the season as Cleveland’s likely backup behind veteran Joe Flacco. His consistency in camp and ability to protect the football reportedly helped him separate from Sanders, though critics like Griffin argue that the comparison was not made on level terms.

The Browns and head coach Kevin Stefanski have dismissed the notion that Sanders was “set up to fail,” pointing instead to the realities of roster management and preseason rotations. Still, Griffin’s comments amplify a narrative that has gained momentum among fans and observers who believe Sanders deserves more patience before being evaluated.

For Shedeur Sanders, the situation is a test of resilience. He is expected to remain on the roster, but the early weeks of the season may determine whether he can carve out a role in Cleveland’s long-term plans. Griffin’s outspoken support places further spotlight on the rookie, ensuring that the debate around his development will continue well beyond the preseason.
