The first season back in Morgantown for head coach Rich Rodriguez didn’t go well. At 4-8 and 2-7 in the Big 12, expectations were much higher for West Virginia in 2025. However, Rodriguez was able to soothe some of those wounds during the first day of the early Signing Day period by pulling off multiple flips.
Overall, five players flipped to West Virginia throughout the day, but two grabbed the headlines. And both had interesting subplots.
First, there was the addition of four-star safety Matt Sieg. Sieg was long committed to Penn State, but after James Franklin’s firing, it was pretty much a guarantee that he would sign elsewhere even though he never officially decommitted. The interesting twist was that he never mentioned West Virginia leading up to Signing Day. Virginia Tech, Notre Dame or Pittsburgh were considered his likely destination, so ending up with the Mountaineers was a huge surprise.
Later in the day came the announcement that four-star running back Amari Latimer had flipped from Wisconsin to West Virginia. While Latimer committed to the Badgers in June, he flirted with several other schools over the next few months. Eventually, that flirting landed him in Morgantown late yesterday afternoon.
Joining Sieg and Latimer as flips yesterday were three-star tight end Xavier Anderson (Cincinnati), three-star wide receiver Greg Wilfred (UTSA) and three-star athlete John Johnson (Washington State).
West Virginia fans are hoping that Rodriguez was able to identify the team’s faults during the 2024 season in order to replenish the roster. While it is always difficult for a true freshman to make an immediate impact, both Sieg and Latimer have the talent to help that process.
The next step for Rodriguez and West Virginia is even more important, with the transfer portal reopening in less than a month. Yesterday’s flips were a good start, but the 2026 season will more directly rely on Rodriguez’ success there.
Rodriguez needs a bounce back season in 2026 and yesterday was a very good start towards that.
