The University of Kentucky rifle team is gearing up for their second stretch of regular-season competition as they head to West Point, New York this weekend for dual matches against Army and Nebraska. The action will kick off on Saturday as Kentucky faces off against Army at the Tronsrue Marksmanship Center. On Sunday, they will take on Nebraska in a neutral-site dual match at the same facility. Both matches will be available to watch online at UKathletics.com starting at 9 a.m. ET.
Kentucky head coach Harry Mullins expressed his excitement for the start of the 2024 portion of their schedule, saying, “I was very proud of how we ended the season up in Alaska with some good performances and look forward to seeing how we can continue that momentum into 2024. We know the regular season is all about getting better and perfecting our craft as we head into the GARC Championships and NCAAs. It will be great to be back in the range with the team this weekend.”
The Wildcats are coming off their best performance of the season in their last match, where they posted a season-high team score of 4745. Fifth-year senior Emmie Sellers had a standout performance, setting new career highs in both smallbore and air rifle. This performance helped Kentucky secure a season-high score in both disciplines, with a 2357 in smallbore and a 2388 in air rifle. Their 4745 aggregate tied for the fifth-highest team score in the nation this season.
Sellers had an exceptional second relay, scoring career-high marks in both smallbore and air rifle. She scored an impressive 588 in smallbore, including a perfect 200 in prone. In air rifle, Sellers scored a 598, just two shots off a perfect 600. Sophomore Sofia Ceccarello also had a fantastic performance, scoring a 591 in smallbore and a 599 in air rifle. Her aggregate score of 1190 tied for the highest individual score of the match.
Kentucky currently ranks as one of only two teams in the nation to score a 2357 or higher in smallbore this season and one of only three teams with an air rifle team score of 2388 or higher. Overall, the team is averaging a 2342.86 in smallbore and a 2379.29 in air rifle for an aggregate average of 4722.14.
Their first opponents, Army, has an aggregate average of 4679.33, while Nebraska has an aggregate average of 4708.50. It will surely be a competitive weekend for the Wildcats as they look to build on their recent success.
