Since stepping into boxing, Dana White’s approach has started to raise some eyebrows, and now a legend of the sport has weighed in.
White made his entry into the boxing world by promoting the high-profile bout between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford a month ago.
Together with Saudi royal adviser Turki Alalshikh, White launched TKO Boxing earlier this year and looks keen to make an impact on the sport.
But his feud with fellow promoter Eddie Hearn has led to criticism that he is allegedly putting limits on fighters’ earning potential.
Roy Jones Jr., a highly respected figure in the sport, has become the latest to share his thoughts on White’s growing presence in boxing.
The boxing world is closely watching the implications of TKO’s challenge to the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act, especially in light of the recently approved Revival Act.
From Jones Jr.’s point of view, these changes are cause for concern. He is worried that White is trying to restrict fighters and fundamentally alter the landscape of boxing.
“The things that are going on, I kind of agree with Eddie’s (Hearn) side more. You know, I’m not the biggest Eddie fan. But I do agree with him as far as boxing goes. You can’t come treat boxing like the UFC.
“These guys, there’s a ceiling on their pay. There’s never been a ceiling on boxers’ pay. And there shouldn’t be one put on there now. So, how does he (White) have the right to come in and change our sport when his sport is younger than our sport? No, that’s not gonna happen,” he told iFL TV.
Oscar De La Hoya, the former world champion and Olympic gold medallist, has reignited his long-standing feud with Dana White by weighing in on the UFC boss’ plans to expand further into boxing.
De La Hoya dismissed any chance of White taking over the sport, pointing to its deep roots and established structure as reasons why such a move would not work.
Speaking to Ariel Helwani, he said: “With boxing, there’s so much history, it’s impossible. All over the world, you have these boxing hubs that are controlled by the WBC, WBA, et cetera.”
De La Hoya added: “To erase all that history is impossible. You’re going to get pushback when you’re trying to monopolise the sport.”
