The Kansas City Royals have been pushing for back-to-back postseason appearances, entering Monday just three games behind the Seattle Mariners in the wild card race. A series against the struggling Chicago White Sox this week gives the franchise a chance to gain ground.
The team has dealt with injuries to key players, but on Monday received a boost with utility man Michael Massey returning from the injured list after a two-month absence. In a corresponding move, John Rave was optioned to Triple-A Omaha to clear roster space.
Massey’s return provides the Royals with another depth option, although the 27-year-old struggled mightily when healthy this year—batting just .202 with a .479 OPS across 56 games.

With Massey back, the Royals now face a decision regarding Jac Caglianone, who is in the midst of a rehab assignment in Triple-A after suffering a left hamstring strain.
Caglianone has been on a tear over the past two weeks, showing no signs of the injury in Triple-A. He’s batting .388 (19-for-49) with a 1.158 OPS in 11 games—the same level of production that led to his quick MLB call-up earlier this season.
Now, with Massey in the mix and trade deadline acquisition Mike Yastrzemski performing well since arriving in Kansas City, the organization faces a tough decision on Caglianone.
The outfield has become crowded, and while Caglianone remains a major part of the team’s future, they may opt to let him continue developing once his rehab assignment expires. He was selected sixth overall in the 2024 MLB Draft and carries long-term value.
Still, Caglianone’s recent performance clearly warrants consideration for a call-up. The 22-year-old could make an impact on the current season despite struggling during his first stint (.147 batting average and .485 OPS in 41 games).
When his rehab assignment expires on September 1, roster expansion could clear a path for his return. But with two depth pieces added since his injury, it’s no longer a guarantee.
