Russell Wilson Reacts to Yankees' Historic Performance

Every athlete headed to East Rutherford has a choice to make. When baseball season rolls around, will they root for the New York Mets or New York Yankees?

Many have chosen the half-blood route, supporting whichever team is playing well and/or inviting them to throw out the first pitch. For New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson, the decision was obvious.

Wilson belongs to a small list of quarterbacks who have heard their names called in both the NFL and MLB Drafts. Coincidentally, his backup, Jameis Winston, was drafted by the Texas Rangers. Wilson was drafted by the Colorado Rockies before being claimed by the Rangers.

However, the Rangers traded him to the New York Yankees in 2018. Halfway through an esteemed NFL career, Wilson wasn’t exactly rising up prospect rankings. But as a special guest during spring training who could assist with leadership and athleticism, he made a handful of cameos.

Thus, the Bronx Bombers were bound to find his support once he put pen to paper with the Giants.

On Saturday, Wilson reacted to the Yankees’ historic performance in a 20-9 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.

For the first time in baseball history, New York began the game with back-to-back-to-back home runs on the contests’ first three pitches. First baseman Paul Goldschmidt, left fielder Cody Bellinger, and right fielder Aaron Judge began the game with a barrage against former Yankees pitcher Nestor Cortes, and Wilson took to social media to join in on the fun.

“So sweet!” Wilson posted. “The Great Bambino is smiling!”

Saturday was special for multiple reasons. After the fast start, New York went on to hit six more home runs, setting a franchise record for homers in a game. The Yankees were one shy of the MLB record. Each of their first six hitters hit a home run at some point in the game, and it goes without saying that 20 runs don’t get put on the board very often,

As Wilson watched, New York did its part to emulate a football score. The Giants scored 20+ points just five times in 2024.

The quarterback is clearly ready to entrench himself in the city and everything that comes with it; he’ll hope to improve upon those offensive marks, too. Weaponized by receiver Malik Nabers, a deep offensive line, and running back Tyrone Tracy Jr., he’s well-positioned to do so in 2025.
