In what was a huge betting upset, Rolando Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) leaves Times Square, NYC, with the WBA regular welterweight title.
Romero scored a second-round knockdown and maneuvered his way to a unanimous decision over Ryan Garcia (24-2, 20 KOs). The judges saw this one 115-112, 115-112, and 118-109 for Romero, an 11-1 betting underdog going into tonight’s fight.
During the post-fight interview, Romero kept it short and sweet as he wasn’t ready to call anyone out for his next fight. Instead, Romero thanked God and said he would like to see Haney-Garcia 2 next.
According to CompuBox, “Romero landed 57 of 280 total punches, and Garcia landed 66 of 210. The difference was Garcia’s jab, where he out-landed Romero 48-39. Power punches connected were even at 18.”
In the first round, it was a jab fest as both fighters were doing a lot of foot feints and trying to figure out a good distance to operate. Neither man stood out in the round, as few punches were thrown and landed. Seconds into the second round, Romero landed a double left hook which sent Garcia crashing down to the canvas. He got up right away and regained his focus as he ended the round strong with a big left hook.
Romero continued with his aggressive pressure throughout the third round, as Garcia was a little gun-shy coming off the knockdown in the previous round. Garcia barely threw any punches and was trying to make an adjustment. The fourth round was a repeat of the first, as both fights were doing a ton of feints but not throwing any punches.
Romero dictated the action in the fifth as Garcia couldn’t find his offense, which allowed Romero to get more shots off. At this point of the fight, Garcia’s jab was nonexistent, and his confidence appeared low. In the sixth round, Romero landed some clean body shots, giving Garcia fits with his movement.
Rounds 7-12 consisted of Romero moving his head well and landing the cleaner, more effective punches. After the fight, Garcia just couldn’t get it going and said that the time away from the ring led to him being unable to find his offense throughout the fight.
