Ryan Grubb highlights Alabama tight end providing depth, freshman showing physicality

Alabama football’s starting tight end duo is expected to be Danny Lewis and Josh Cuevas.

Cuevas got some reps last season behind Robbie Ouzts and CJ Dippre at the position. He earned playing time in all of the Crimson Tide’s 13 games in 2024. Lewis also contributed on offense and special teams throughout the 2024 season.

The duo has performed well as leaders in the Tide’s tight end room during fall camp, per Grubb.

However, depth at the position is a bit of a question mark ahead of the college football season. Grubb shed some light on the development happening in the room during his latest media availability.

“Danny and Josh do a great job as the older guys, getting a lot of reps,” Grubb said. “Kaleb (Edwards) has shown up to be more physical. That was one of the things I think was going to be the biggest challenge for initially, making the big jump from high school ball to this. Jay Lindsey is super dependable, is a guy showing up to be able to be a guy with his hand in the ground, can be a move player for you, certainly is providing a lot of depth for us.”

Edwards is a 6-foot-6 freshman tight end and a former four-star out of Oak Ridge High School in California. He signed with Alabama in December, but he did not enroll early. The former four-star joined the Tide over the Summer.

It is easy to spot the big freshman at practice.

Lindsey is a product of Butler, Alabama. He was the Crimson Tide’s last healthy tight end during the spring and earned some meaningful reps during that time.

Alabama football used three tight ends on a consistent basis during the 2024 season. It will be interesting to see how deep their rotation will be in 2025.
