Ryan Poles' latest comments following final roster cuts quiets down speculation on adding a player like Za'Darius Smith to the locker room

The Chicago Bears finalized the initial 53-man roster on Tuesday after going through the final roster decisions, but it's worth reminding that changes can still be made to this initial list before the Week 1 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings.

Later today, the league will inform teams which players were acquired off waivers following final roster cuts, and there's still some veteran free agents on the street looking for a new home in 2025.

Needless to say, the Bears still have some avenues to make this roster better and there's certainly some major concerns with the current shape of the 53-man roster.

One of the biggest concerns is at the defensive end position after five players made the cut, but two of those players have been dealing with injuries in Austin Booker and Dominique Robinson. Even before those injuries, fans wanted to see the team add another veteran off the edge.

While speaking with the media after final cuts were made, general manager Ryan Poles weighed in on that possibility with a telling answer.

"We always will call and see what the situation is and then weigh that against our short-term and long-term decision making process," Poles explained. "Does it make sense? What does it take to acquire a player? If the player's here, what does it cost? And then say, okay, for where we are, is that something we want to do?

"We're also trying to find, is it the right culture fit? There's more levels to it than just grabbing the talent and bringing it in. There's some impact things that happen in your locker room and on the field and your salary cap. Yeah it can give you a burst of energy, but long-term does it make sense for you or is it going to be a derailer down the road?"

Clearly, the Bears will be selective and intentional with making such a move, if it even happens to begin with. The final part Poles said was the most telling part, if the Bears add a veteran to the room, it needs to be someone who fits the team culture in the locker room and can gel with the guys.

Which is why someone like Za'Darius Smith should be off the table. Don't get me wrong, Smith is a great player on the field who's recorded 24.5 sacks over the last three seasons. But, he did so on three different teams and there's a reason he's been bouncing around the league lately.

Chicago should recognize those potential red flags after seeing how things ended with Smith in Green Bay and Minnesota, even Detroit moved on from him even though it was many salary cap related. A player like that could be a derailer for this locker room, which is why the Bears are being selective in which players they look into adding on the roster.

One avenue Poles will keep open, to watch for later today, is any potential waiver wire claims.

"We'll sit in the draft room all night and just dig and we'll identify guys. We have great communication with our coaches and we'll see if we can find some players that can help us on our 53 or even help on practice squad and continue to elevate the entire team," Poles added. "It's a great opportunity to get better. It gets harder because the roster gets better and the spots are limited. It's a lot of fun just searching, trying to find guys based on some traits or certain teams that are really deep in one position, so we know they can't keep them all, and identifying which guys can help us."
