Sam Shaw is the first Canadian to rank on this list.
This is Blue Jays Nation’s annual mid-season prospect list, where we’ll take a look at the 50 best prospects in the Toronto Blue Jays organization. I’ll look at the player’s stats, what other publications have to say, as well as my own observations of the players.
Shaw has had an up-and-down type of start to his career, but ranks as our 32nd-best prospect in the Blue Jays’ system. If you missed who ranked as our 33rd-best prospect, you can read about Ryan Jennings here.
Position: Second base/outfield
Bats: Left
Born: February 26, 2005
Acquired: Ninth round, 2023 draft
Previous ranking: 43rd (2023 mid-season)
Shaw is from Victoria, British Columbia and was committed to Xavier University until the Blue Jays selected him in the ninth round of the 2023 draft. The utility player was an over-slot draft pick, receiving a bonus of $282,500. To end the 2023 season, Shaw appeared in nine games with the Florida Complex League Blue Jays, where he slashed .207/.425/.276 with no home runs in 40 plate appearances.
The 2024 season saw him spend the entirety of the year with the FCL Jays, where he slashed .220/.361/.304 with two home runs in 209 plate appearances for a 95 wRC+. That said, he started the 2025 season off strong with the Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays, slashing .253/.383/.418 with seven home runs in 274 plate appearances for a 129 wRC+. Shaw also had a walk rate of 16.4%, while striking out 19.7% of the time.
In mid-July, Shaw returned to his home province to play for the High-A Vancouver Canadians. In his 28 plate appearances, Shaw slashed just .111/.143/.148 for a -24 wRC+. Shaw was placed on the 7-day Injured List in early August and hasn’t played since.
Although he’s struggled in his brief High-A appearance, there’s a lot to look forward to with Shaw. The Canadian ranks as MLB Pipeline’s 20th-best prospect, as they note his strong eye at the plate and average hit tool and average speed. Defensively, his home is still in question as his arm is considered his weakest tool. He’s not going to hit a ton of home runs, but there is certainly MLB potential with the 20-year-old lefty.
