San Francisco 49ers schedule top-30 visit with Oregon DL Brandon Dorlus after losing Arik Armstead
Troy Wayrynen-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers recently said goodbye to a former Oregon defensive lineman as they parted with Arik Armstead, who was previously their longest-tenured player, and they could about to turn to another Ducks player to help fill the void.

Armstead, who was released after refusing to take a pay cut as part of a contract restructure, is now a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars. San Francisco drafted him in the first round out of Oregon in 2015 and a year later took college teammate DeForest Buckner seventh overall, with that duo critical to the 49ers' Super Bowl run in 2019.

The 49ers signed Cleveland Browns defensive tackle Jordan Elliott in free agency, though he is more likely a replacement for the departed Javon Kinlaw. Following Armstead's departure, the 49ers made a trade with the Houston Texans for Maliek Collins, who is likely to start next to Javon Hargrave after an impressive five-sack season in 2023.

San Francisco also plans to use newly signed defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos as an interior rusher regularly on passing downs, but a more long-term potential replacement for Armstead will eventually be needed.

To that end, the 49ers have scheduled a top-30 visit with Oregon defensive lineman Brandon Dorlus, per James Crepea of The Oregonian.

Dorlus is a different athlete to Armstead coming out. Armstead measured at 6ft 7in and 292 points when he entered the draft, while Dorlus is of a smaller build at 6ft 3in and 283 pounds.

But he ticks a lot of the boxes that the 49ers look for in their defensive linemen. His 10-yard split of 1.68 seconds was in the 83rd percentile for defensive tackles, reflecting an inability to get off the ball extremely quickly. That is evident on tape, though Dorlus needs to generate an explosive get-off more consistently at the next level.

A 75th percentile 3-cone drill is illustrative of surprising lower-body flexibility for a man of his size, which has allowed him to succeed playing on the edge as well as an interior defender. Dorlus played 253 snaps in the B gap in 2023 but also played 159 over tackle and 160 outside tackle, per Pro Football Focus.

The 49ers covet that kind of versatility and they will likely have been greatly impressed by Dorlus' ability to win as a pass rusher and hold his ground at the point of attack and make plays in the run game seemingly regardless of his alignment on the defensive front.

His success in both areas is in large part a product of the frightening power Dorlus has in his hands, the type of force that has long been a hallmark of Armstead's game.

Dorlus boasts a fearsome bull rush that is complemented by an impressive array of pass rush moves. As a pass rusher and in winning at the point of attack against the run, his issue is consistency.

But having restocked the cupboard on the defensive line effectively in free agency, the 49ers are in a position where they can potentially groom a long-term Armstead replacement without putting too much strain on him early in his career.

San Francisco has a strong track record of drafting players with whom it holds top-30 visits, so there's at least a chance they have identified Dorlus as a player who, with some fine-tuning, can step up and fill the role vacated by the man who starred at his alma mater.
