The Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile have kicked off, and the University of Louisville swimming team has sent three athletes and a coach to compete on the international stage. Representing the Cardinals are Gabi Albiero from Team USA, Murilo Sartori from Brazil, and Matias Santiso from Argentina. The team is led by coaches Brent Arckey, Mark Bernardino, Stephanie Juncker, Jeremy Linn, and Jake Shrum.

Albiero will be competing in the 50M freestyle event, Sartori in the 200M freestyle, and Santiso in both the 50M and 100M freestyle. All three athletes are also eligible to participate in relays.

On Sunday, Oct. 22, the men’s 200M freestyle heats took place. The preliminary rounds for the men’s and women’s 100M freestyle were held on Monday, Oct. 23, with the finals scheduled for later in the evening. The preliminary rounds for the men’s and women’s 50M freestyle will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 24, with the finals occurring on the same night.

In the preliminary rounds, Santiso impressed with a lifetime best time of 49.68, securing a spot in the B-final of the 100 freestyle event. However, he finished fourth in the B-final with a time of 49.99. Despite not advancing to the A-final, Santiso showed great improvement and represented Argentina well.

The Pan American Games are a significant international competition, and the University of Louisville swimmers are demonstrating their talent on a global stage. With numerous athletes from around the world competing, it will surely be an exciting event for both the athletes and their fans.
