Ruben Amorim backs new Manchester United signings to aid Old Trafford rebuild

This season has started off on a tough note for Manchester United, just as the last one ended. In the opening game against Arsenal, the team showed some energy in the early moments, but the picture soon changed. Altay Bayindir misjudged a corner and Riccardo Calafiori scored with a header to give Arsenal a 1-0 lead.

United then went for an equaliser. Benjamin Sesko came on, Bryan Mbeumo produced a superb athletic effort, and then tested Raya with a header, but the equaliser did not come. Next up is a game against Fulham, and the pressure is higher than ever as the disappointments of last season still weigh heavily.

Ruben Amorim and the hopes of new signings

Ruben Amorim took the bench mid-season in 2024/25, but a 15th-place finish and a Europa League final loss to Spurs further highlighted the club’s plight. This summer, the club added some big names. Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and young Diego Leon came in to give the team a new direction.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Amorim said that this time they have more options, but football is not just limited to the field. He pointed out that players like Cunha and Mbeumo have come at a time when the atmosphere has changed. Injuries sustained during last season’s challenging period continue to affect the team, but the new players do not have that burden. Amorim said that this has also made the players feel relieved off the field, as the new faces bring a different energy.

Cunha is known to link up really well in attack. On the other hand, Mbeumo’s work ethic and Sesko’s clinical presence can give a new shape to United’s attack. Most importantly, Amorim believes that their impact will not be limited to the game but will also be on the team’s dressing room and atmosphere. United suffered pressure and a lack of confidence last season, but now Amorim thinks that the new players will create a lighter and positive atmosphere.

“We have different options this year, but sometimes football is more than just on the pitch.

“They [Mbeumo and Cunha] are coming in at a moment where the spirit is different, the place is different – sometimes we have a lot of very good players, but the scars were there and that influenced the dynamic of the team.

“They can help us, not just on the pitch but off the pitch too, I feel the guys are freer because they were not here in the very, very difficult moments – they are seeing a different thing.”

Amorim has a point. If the likes of Cunha, Mbeumo and Sesko are making players more open and confident off the pitch, it will slowly reflect on the game. In a league as tough as the Premier League, confidence and team spirit are as important as technical skill. The burden of last season’s failures has weighed heavily on the old guard, so the clear vision of the new faces could be crucial. It will help the team move on from past wounds.

The match against Fulham will be a real test of this new thinking. If United can show that the positivity in the dressing room is reflected in the passing, runs and combinations on the pitch, it could be the start of a turnaround. This team need time to produce results, but if the environment improves, United could slowly regain respect in the Premier League. Meanwhile, in transfer reports, Florian Plettenberg downplays Manchester United’s links to Angelo Stiller, and on the other hand, Manchester United are still in active talks to sign Senne Lammens.
