Scott Van Pelt Rips College Basketball Coach For 'Damaging' Program

ESPN's Scott Van Pelt has never been known for dishing out hot takes and yelling on national television. That being said, he absolutely crushed a college basketball coach this week for "damaging" one of the top programs in the Big Ten.

Just three days after Maryland was eliminated from the NCAA Tournament, the program lost head coach Kevin Willard to Villanova. Countless people thought he handled this situation poorly, especially since there were rumblings about him leaving the Terrapins prior to the Sweet 16.

Van Pelt, who studied at the University of Maryland, didn't hold back his thoughts on Willard's exit. On the latest episode of his podcast, he crushed the former Maryland coach for basically leaving a nasty taste in everyone's mouth on the way out.

"Of course, Kevin Willard can go to Villanova. Of course, you can go back to your Big East roots. Of course, if it is better for your family. We’re savages, but we’re not soulless savages. If it’s better for your family, of course," Van Pelt said. "But maybe you don’t take a giant [expletive] on the front steps on the house you have lived in for the last three years. You don’t do damage to the University and program where you have been for three years. And you don’t take the efforts of the people behind the scenes who have poured their hearts and souls into this for free, for you to try and fill in the gaps.

"Maybe you don’t tell those people that to their face repeatedly when everyone in the industry is saying to me… 'Scott, why are you guys wasting your time. This is done.' Everyone in the business knows it, he’s gone."

Willard finished his time at Maryland with a 65-39 record. His best finish was this year's Sweet 16 appearance.

Villanova is hoping Willard will lead the program back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2021-22 season.

Maryland didn't waste time replacing Willard. On Tuesday, the school finalized a contract with Texas A&M coach Buzz Williams.
