Former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Jalen Milroe thought he was the top quarterback in the draft, at least that’s what he says the Seattle Seahawks told him during his pre-draft visit. But when Seattle’s front office was asked about it, the response was far less enthusiastic.
“No, I don’t think he was actually… but it was close,” GM John Schneider admitted during a press conference, effectively walking back Milroe’s claim.
The former Alabama quarterback was originally projected as a late second-round pick, but he slid to No. 92 overall, making him the fourth quarterback taken in the draft. While scouts praised his athleticism and ability to extend plays, concerns about his accuracy and decision-making likely factored into his draft position.
Still, Seattle sees potential. With Sam Darnold set to start, Milroe won’t be thrown into the mix right away. He’ll have time to develop under offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, whose system could be a great fit for Milroe’s dual-threat style.
Though it’s unclear what Seattle truly thought of Milroe before the draft, he’s got a chip on his shoulder. Whether he can prove the Seahawks wrong and establish himself as one of the best quarterbacks from this class remains to be seen. But for now, he’s got time to grow, and Seattle is betting that his upside is worth the wait.
