Shedeur Sanders’ Iconic Jersey Number Could Be Available After Latest Browns Move

As the NFL's 53-man roster deadline approaches, things are looking up for Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders.

The fifth-round pick delivered an impressive performance in the Browns' first preseason game, finishing 13-of-24 for 138 yards and two touchdowns.

Kenny Pickett Trade Moves Sanders Up Depth Chart

The quarterback room in Cleveland received a major shake-up on Monday when the Browns traded second-string quarterback Kenny Pickett to the Las Vegas Raiders.

That left Sanders and fellow 2025 NFL Draft pick Dillon Gabriel as the two healthy options behind Week 1 starter Joe Flacco. Gabriel is ahead of Sanders on the official depth chart, but both moved up the pecking order.

Another expected roster move may hold even more personal importance to Sanders, though.

Browns Cut Could Finally Make No. 2 Available

NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported on Monday that the Browns plan to cut veteran wide receiver and kick returner DeAndre Carter at Tuesday's roster deadline.

Carter wears No. 2 for Cleveland — the same jersey number Sanders famously wore from high school until it was retired by Colorado at the conclusion of his college football career.

With Carter having already claimed his preferred choice, Sanders opted for No. 12 to start his NFL career as a nod to his mentor, Tom Brady. When asked if he considered offering Carter money to switch numbers, Sanders joked, "My signing bonus ain’t that high right now."

Why Did Shedeur Sanders Wear No. 2?

Sanders wore the same number that his father, Deion Sanders, wore at Florida State. He rocked it while being coached by his dad at every step from high school to Jackson State to Colorado.

It went beyond honoring the family legacy when Sanders fused it into his "2Legendary" brand.

Will Shedeur Switch Back To His Iconic Number?

First of all, Sanders has to survive Tuesday's roster cut. If he does so, he would be allowed to change numbers before the beginning of the regular season, per NFL rules.

Sanders led all rookies, including No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward and college teammate Travis Hunter, in jersey sales before he even had an official number with the Browns.

It would be a no-brainer for the team to let him switch back to his preferred number, as fans would flock to own an NFL jersey that represents Sanders in his iconic No. 2.

While keeping No. 12 would offer Sanders the opportunity to create a new legacy, his strong family values and established brand would likely steer him back to his old number.

There's no reason to believe that the Browns' roster decision was made with Sanders' number in mind, but it may turn into a convenient coincidence that could work out for all parties.
