The spring league meeting that just passed had an interesting resolution for NFL players being able to play flag football in the 2028 Olympics. Since the Olympic committee voted to include flag football as an Olympic sport, it has been widely speculated that NFL players wanted to go for Gold in Los Angeles in 2028. The vote passed with a 32-0 vote, meaning one player from each team will be able to participate, and then one international player from each team as well could play for their home country. Let’s dive into how everyone is reacting to this.
The inclusion of flag football will really bring football and the NFL to the global stage even more than it is now. This has been in the works since the International Olympic Committee voted it in back in October 2023. This will be the NFL’s time to make its own version of the “Dream Team” like the NBA did back in the 90s.
There are still hoops that have to be jumped through with the NFLPA and the Olympic Committee on negotiating terms for player protection plus other hurdles. The other major hurdle that comes to mind is the timing of the 2028 Olympics itis scheduled to take place on July 14-30 which is right around the time NFL training camp starts.
The star players around the league are also chiming in with how they feel about the opportunity to win a Gold Medal. Justin Jefferson of the Vikings said, “To think about playing in the Olympics and getting a Gold Medal is a dream.”
This is a great chance for the NFL to keep growing globally for men’s and women’s football players. The Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028 are still three years away, so there is plenty of time to get all the details in place so each country is represented.
