The Tennessee Vols will almost certainly drop in the new AP Top 25 poll after their overtime loss to the Georgia Bulldogs.
Tennessee was a missed field a goal away from being one of the most hyped teams in the nation.
Instead, Max Gilbert's field goal went wide right, which seemingly took the air out of Tennessee's offense and defense, resulting in an overtime win for the Bulldogs.
Tennessee was ranked at No. 15 in last week's AP Top 25 poll.
Sports Illustrated predicts the Volunteers will fall to No. 20 (they have Vanderbilt at No. 19, for reference).
On3, meanwhile, has Tennessee dropping just a couple of spots to N0. 17.
This is the problem with the AP Top 25 poll. I feel better about Tennessee as a football team than I did before their game against Georgia. Tennessee is a missed field goal away from the narrative around the program being completely different. If that field goal is made, Tennessee vaults into the top 10 and no one blinks and eye.
Now, I’m not saying AP voters should suddenly change their process and move the Vols up in the rankings. I understand how the AP Top 25 poll works and what it rewards. I get it. But that doesn’t mean the system isn’t flawed.
