Spotify Premium subscribers in some regions are about to feel the pinch, Reuters reported. The music streaming giant announced Monday that it will hike prices for individual plan subscribers by 9 percent starting in September. The change will affect users across Europe, South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and the Asia-Pacific region.
For European customers, that means a jump from €10.99 to €11.99 per month. Users can expect an email notification from Spotify explaining the changes in the coming weeks.
Unlike previous rounds of price increases, U.S. and Canadian subscribers are exempt from this latest bump, Neowin reported. Spotify had already increased its individual plan in those markets from $10.99 to $11.99 in mid‑2024. For now, U.S. users won’t see further changes when the September adjustment rolls out globally.
Spotify’s decision comes on the heels of a rough earnings report in July, where the company forecast lower-than-expected quarterly profits. High payroll taxes, reportedly costing Spotify $135 million, offset the platform’s growth in music demand. But while margins have been squeezed, Spotify’s share price has still climbed nearly 50 percent since the start of 2025.
Following the price hike announcement, Spotify shares surged over 6 percent in pre-market trading on Wall Street, signaling investor confidence in the company’s move to boost revenue.
Spotify says the price increase will help fund its ongoing product expansions, including a larger audiobook catalog, enhanced AI-driven playlists, and new short-form video features. The platform has been pushing to diversify its offerings in a crowded streaming landscape, where competition from Apple Music and Amazon Music remains fierce.
Streaming revenue globally hit a record $20 billion in 2024, according to the Global Music Report, but profitability challenges continue to dog platforms like Spotify, which relies heavily on subscriber growth and premium conversions.
If you're a European, Latin American or Asia‑Pacific subscriber, expect your bill to rise in September. U.S. individual plan users remain at $11.99 per month for now. It's still unclear whether family, duo, or student plans will be affected in future adjustments. For global users, this update sets a tone: Spotify will likely continue raising prices gradually to support growth and margin improvement.
