Known for his stonewalling ability that would tire bowling attacks into submission, Cheteshwar Pujara has announced his retirement from all forms of Indian cricket. He cemented his position at one drop for India, featuring in 103 Tests and five ODIs in an international career spanning from 2010 to 2023.
“Wearing the Indian jersey, singing the anthem, and trying my best each time I stepped on the field – it’s impossible to put into words what it truly meant. But as they say, all good things must come to an end, and with immense gratitude, I have decided to retire from all forms of Indian cricket,” Pujara wrote in his social media post.
Key statistics from Pujara’s illustrious career
7195 runs scored by Cheteshwar Pujara in Tests, making him one of the eight Indian batters to tally over 7000 runs in the format.
6529 runs of Pujara’s Test career came at the No.3 position, including 18 hundreds; only the legendary Rahul Dravid exceeded both those figures for India (10524 runs with 28 hundreds).
525 balls faced by Pujara during his obdurate 202 against Australia in Ranchi in 2017 is the most by an Indian batter in a Test innings.
One of his most iconic knocks in an India shirt came in the fourth innings of the Gabba Test against Australia in 2021. At his tenacious best, Pujara went on to score a crucial half-century, laying the foundation for India’s historic win. Despite coping several body blows, he stuck to his game plan and kept the Australian bowlers at bay for close to two sessions through his 211-ball marathon effort.
Ranji Trophy participation off the table
The seasoned pro recently made himself available for the upcoming Ranji Trophy season. Pujara, 37, used to feature only in the multi-day matches for his home state, Saurashtra. ”Earlier, I thought maybe I will play this Ranji season, but then I felt that if young players get the opportunity, they will be ready sooner,” the experienced campaigner said.
Recently, Pujara was overlooked for the Duleep Trophy by the West Zone selectors, who said they wanted to groom youngsters.
