Steelers Emphasize Another Need; Grab WR Roman Wilson With 84th Overall Pick In 2024 NFL Draft
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers clearly had one main goal in mind entering the 2024 NFL Draft. The offensive line added two monsters in Troy Fautanu and Zach Frazier, courtesy of the team's first and second-round picks. Both players could step in immediately and help set up an incredible rushing attack that will threaten to be one of the best in the NFL. General Manager Omar Khan and Head Coach Mike Tomlin continue to make moves to better the roster. With the team's initial selection in the third round, wide receiver Roman Wilson from the University of Michigan is now headed for the Steel City.

George Pickens is the unquestioned top wide receiver on the team's roster, but after trading Diontae Johnson, it was imperative to bring in a prospect that could step in sooner rather than later in order to take some pressure off of Pickens.

This is yet another solid pick by Khan in 2024. Wilson may have not been looked at as one of the top-tier receivers in the draft class, but put up impressive numbers in a Michigan offense that relied on the run in 2023. The wideout caught 48 passes for 789 yards and 12 touchdowns. Knowing that he was coached by Jim Harbaugh doesn't hurt, either.

Wilson, in total, hauled in 107 passes for a total of 1,707 yards and 20 touchdowns during his four-year collegiate career with the Wolverines. Pittsburgh has a knack for successfully picking up pass-catchers outside of the first round. Wilson will now have to live up to that expectation and quickly become a feature in the Steelers' offense.

Steelers' Start To The 2024 NFL Draft Has Been A Home Run On All Levels

Pittsburgh has taken advantage of the board up to this point and the fact that Fautanu, Frazier and Wilson will all wear the black and gold in 2024 is an incredible outcome for the front office. Barring a trade, the franchise still holds the 98th overall pick and will pick once more in the third round. It doesn't seem like the team is straying away from drafting the positions that have widely been acknowledged as the biggest holes on the roster.

Defensive line and cornerback still remain concerns, but the receiving core is far from solidified, even with the Wilson pick. Overall, Steeler Nation has to be ecstatic about how the draft has gone up to this point. The best part is that Khan hasn't had to make any aggressive moves up the board, despite handfuls of teams giving up capital to leap forward.
