There is only one way to make the roster as a fourth-string quarterback headed into Pittsburgh Steelers training camp.
You have to run with whatever opportunity comes you're way. You have to be undeniable when you receive your shot.
And while Skylar Thompson's spot is far from solidified ahead of Tuesday's roster cutdown deadline, he's had what has been the best preseason of his career thus far. He received the opportunity to play so much because of Will Howard's injury.
But how has he played so well? He credits that to something else.
"I feel like sometimes in the past, I've tried to be too perfect, and I feel like that's kind of taken away from me being myself," Thompson told the media over the weekend. "That's the biggest thing that I've learned coming into this opportunity, I got to be myself. I can't be something that I'm not. I feel like when I have that approach and that mindset, I make more plays than I don't. I feel like that set me free coming into this preseason, and has allowed me to go out there and have fun playing the game again and loving playing with my guys."

Maybe it's because it's preseason and the games quite literally mean nothing. But Thompson looks like he's a high school quarterback out there. One who is very good but plays without the pressure of being the best player on the team.
Thompson has remained poised, calm and decisive. And I understand the pushback or devil's advocate approach. Yes, a lot of his reps have come against future stock brokers and insurance salesmen as he commands his offense, but his surroundings haven't been much better.
It's not as if Thompson was playing with the starting offensive line, most of the starting WRs and a healthy mix of Jaylen Warren and Kaleb Johnson behind him. No, that was Mason Rudolph, actually, and Thompson has still performed with third and fourth teamers of his own.

Could Skylar Thompson become Pittsburghs QB2 for 2025?

So I understand the massive grain of salt that his performances should be taken with. But when you see someone play with that level of command and they credit it to being themselves, you know you're a player who's dialed in.
