India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav is on the mend after undergoing successful surgery for a sports hernia in Munich, Germany. The 34-year-old star batter is expected to return to international cricket for India’s white-ball tour of Bangladesh in August 2025.
Yadav, who led India’s T20 team after their triumphant World Cup campaign in June 2024, has been in outstanding form. During the 2025 IPL season, he was instrumental in the Mumbai Indians’ run to the playoffs, scoring 717 runs — the highest ever by a non-opener in the league and a franchise record. He also set a new world mark with 16 consecutive scores of 25 or more.
With India currently engaged in a Test series in England until August 4, Yadav used the window to undergo surgery and recover in time for the upcoming T20I series. India’s tour of Bangladesh begins with three ODIs and three T20Is, starting August 26 in Chattogram. While Yadav hasn’t featured in 50-over cricket since the 2023 World Cup final, he remains a central figure in the T20 format.
Since assuming the captaincy, Yadav has overseen a dynamic transformation in India’s T20 approach, emphasizing aggressive batting and deep line-ups. Under his leadership, India has regularly crossed the 250-run mark, including a blistering 297 against Bangladesh in October 2024 — the third-highest total in T20I history.
Yadav shared a message with fans, expressing his eagerness to rejoin the squad, saying he "can’t wait to be back."
