It would take something big for Houston to stumble its way into the Big 12 Championship - BYU would have to faceplant over the last two games - but there's a path.

All the Cougars can do is take care of its own business, and beating TCU this week and BYU next week would get them to ten wins for the first time since 2021.

TCU is already bowl eligible, but it's on a two-game losing streak. It's job is to play the spoiler, ruining Houston's Big 12 hopes this week and with Cincinnati up next.

Why TCU Will Win

TCU is just fine as long as it doesn’t screw up.

It has the firepower and talent to hang around with Houston in any sort of a scoring fight, but everything breaks down when the misfires start coming.

The Horned Frogs got rocked by BYU 44-13, and the two turnovers didn’t help. The three giveaways were a killer in the 20-17 loss to Iowa State.

There were three turnovers in the loss to Arizona State, three more in the loss to Kansas State, and there weren’t multiple giveaways in the six wins.

Houston has only forced two or more takeaways once in the last seven games. Limit the mistakes, and run really, really well, because …

Why Houston Will Win

Houston only lost when it couldn’t handle the ground game.

West Virginia ripped off 246 yards, Texas Tech blew up in all phases, including over 200 yards on the ground.

TCU hasn’t been able to pound away for more than 200 yards since the win over North Carolina in the opening weekend.

The Horned Frogs are 4-0 when running for more than 115 yards, but the Houston defense is great at controlling the clock and tempo. It should be able to keep TCU from getting into a rushing groove.

TCU will come out firing.

It won't want to bog down and get into the Houston tempo game. It needs to open up the offense and start scoring again after struggling for the last three games. That will be a problem.

Houston's defense will be too good on third downs, and the offense will own the clock by keeping the chains moving in a strong performance that comes down to one last drive to salt away a terrific game.
