For Canadian hockey fans, the Olympic countdown feels different this time. Instead of making the difficult choice between following the NHL and supporting their country, fans will finally get both, watching the world’s best players return in national jerseys on the biggest stage. After more than a decade, NHL stars are back at the Olympics, and Team Canada will once again carry the weight of expectation in Milan.
Canada is the most successful nation in men’s Olympic hockey history, having won nine gold medals. Iconic moments like Sidney Crosby’s golden goal in 2010 and Canada’s dominant run at the 2014 Sochi Games are still fresh in fans’ memories. That 2014 tournament was the last time Canada competed at the Olympics with a full NHL roster, and cruised to gold without losing a game.
