The Tennessee Vols and the Ohio State Buckeyes will square off in the first round of the College Football Playoff, and it will take place in the primetime spot on the Saturday of the first-round weekend.

Tennessee, the 9 seed, and Ohio State, the 8 seed, will face off at 8:00 pm ET on Saturday, December 21 from Ohio Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.

The committee kept things as status quo from last week, as the Vols and Buckeyes were the 9 and 8 seeds, respectively, the committee's penultimate rankings.

The late game time - and colder temperature - is just another cherry on top of the rotten sundae the Vols were served on Sunday afternoon.  Tennessee's playoff path now goes through Columbus, and if they survive that, they must play the top overall seed and Big Ten champion Oregon Ducks in the Rose Bowl in the quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, 11 seed SMU - the last team in the field over Alabama (to the delight of Tennessee fans) - faces 6 seed Penn State and then would get Boise State, a far easier path to the semifinals than the Vols.

However, for the first time ever, Tennessee fans see "Volunteers" in the final playoff rankings.  And they and the rest of the nation will watch them try to deliver a second straight devastating home loss to the Buckeyes, who lost in their season finale 13-10 to unranked Michigan at Ohio Stadium.
