All  things considered,  the AUSL is delivering in more ways  than one as all four teams are competing and the fans showing up in record numbers. With the season heading towards the final games in the month of June, the standings show separation, but far from over. The recent action has taken place in Wichita and Norman, Oklahoma with two game apiece. That being said, here is a recap of the last four games in the first season of AUSL.

A Lights Out Effort In Oklahoma

In this matchup, the Talons sent right-hander Georgina Corrick to the mound to face a Volts offense looking to rejuvenate. Yet, the bats stayed cooled as the member of the Great Britain National Team went the distance, tossing the first complete game shutout in AUSL history.

Corrick allowed three hits, three walks, and struck out seven. As for the Talons offense, it came from two players in the 4-0 win. First, Hannah Flippen hit an RBI single in the top of third inning for the early lead. Caroline Jacobsen hit a two-run in the fifth as Flippen added another RBI to end the offense for the Talons and game.

A Hit Parade At Wilkins Stadium

As noted in previous pieces, the Bandits offense is atop nearly all offensive categories this season. The offense got underway in the top of the second inning as with a Bella Dayton RBI double for the Bandits. Also, Morgan Zerkle knocked in two runs with a double of her own while Skylar Wallace hit an RBI single, giving the Bandits a 4-0 lead.

The Blaze has two runs cross the plate in the bottom of the third with RBI singles by Danielle Gibson Whorton and Ana Gold. However, Devyn Netz opened up the game for the Bandits with a three-run home run in the top of the fourth for a 7-2 lead. Additionally, Cori McMillan hit an RBI single as Sydney McKinney slammed a three-run homer in the seventh to cement the Bandits offensive display.

Although Korbie Otis added and RBI single for the Blaze, they fell short by a score of 11-3. It’s important to note both teams combined for 23 hits (Bandits – 13, Blaze – 10). Odicci Alexander picked up the win, going three innings and allowing a hit with four strikeouts.

Don’t Call It A Comeback (But It Was) In Kansas

Without question, the Blaze were on a mission versus the Bandits, whom they lost to 11-3. While Bubba Nickles-Camarena hit a solo homer in the top of the first for the Bandits, the Blaze responded in the bottom of the second. Whorton hit an RBI single, Anissa Urtez plated two runs with a double, and Kayla Kowalik and Ally Shipman-Shrout added RBIs for a 6-1 lead.

In this instance, the Blaze looked poised for their second win of the season, but the Bandits had other place. Zerkle hit a three-run homer while Wallace hit a solo one in the top of the fifth, making it a 6-5 game. McKenzie Clark‘s RBI single made it a 7-5 contest. In the end, an Erin Coffel three-run homer in the sixth and a solo home run from Nickles-Camarena in the seventh inning completed the comeback.

The 9-7 win for the Bandits makes it four straight wins. Also, the game featured a combined 24 hits (13 -Bandits, 11 – Blaze).

A Big Homecoming (and Inning) At Love’s Field

Unquestionably, this AUSL game between the Talons and Volts was bulit around a pitching showdown. Here, former UCLA great Megan Faraimo (Talons) versus Oklahoma Sooners star Sam Landry (Volts). Having said that, the offense from both squads was non-existent for the first three innings. In the top of the fourth inning, Sahvanna Jaquish added a RBI for the Talons. Later on in the fifth inning, Ali Aguilar and Sharlize Palacios each hit a solo homer for an early 3-0 Talons lead.

As the game entered the bottom of the fifth, the Volts responded with RBIs from Amanda Lorenz, Sierra Romero, and Sooners star Tiare Jennings. Once again, the offenses cooled until the top of the eighth inning. To start, Flipped hit an RBI double and a two-run double by Jacobsen. Later, an RBI single by Jaquish, and a sacrifice fly RBI by Bri Ellis for a five-run inning. The Talons get the 8-5 victory due to the comeback in that eighth inning.

Looking at the starting pitchers, Faraimo went six-and-a-third innings, allowing two runs on six hits with four strikeouts. Landry threw seven-and-a-third innings, allowing six hits and earned runs with five strikeouts.
