The LSU Tigers are national champions for the eighth time in program history.
The LSU Tigers stole game one of the Men's College World Series Finals thanks to a complete game shutout from their ace, Kade Anderson. On Sunday, they had a chance to close it out and secure their eighth national championship with a win over Coastal Carolina.
Anthony Eyanson got the ball today and started off hot, holding Coastal scoreless in the first after LSU could only manage a single in the top of the inning, but that was far from the most interesting part of the first.
With two outs in the bottom of the inning, Coastal Carolina's Head Coach Kevin Schnall was thrown out of the game after arguing balls and strikes with the home plate umpire. Moments later, Coastal's first base coach was also tossed.
The Tigers went three up, three down in the second and Coastal took advantage, blasting a solo homer to left field to take an early 1-0 lead. But it didn't last long as a Daniel Dickinson single, Michael Braswell sac bunt and Ethan Frey RBI double evened the score at one through three innings.
LSU's bats got real hot in the fourth inning, and they took complete control of the game. The Tigers loaded the bases with no outs and Chris Stanfield, who hasn't been particularly good this CWS, came through and lined a single to left field, scoring a pair. Daniel Dickinson laid down a bunt to move the runners to second and third and a couple at bats later, Derek Curiel blasted one up the middle and plated two more runs, giving LSU a 5-1 lead. Coastal's ace, Jacob Morrison, was pulled from the game early, and the Tigers weren't able to do anymore damage in that inning.
Coastal's relievers Hayden Johnson and Darin Horn were lock down in the fifth, sixth and seventh, holding LSU scoreless. Eyanson was looking good, but gave up a two-run shot in the seventh inning to cut LSU's lead to two. Chase Shores entered the game and got out the inning with no more damage.
In his final start as a Tiger, Eyanson threw 7.1 innings where he gave up three runs on seven hits.
The eighth was uneventful. LSU put a couple runners on, but never threatened and Chase Shores retired the Chanticleers in order. Heading into the ninth, LSU held a two-run lead over Coastal Carolina, and coming into this game, LSU had won 114 straight games when leading by two or more entering the ninth.
Ethan Frey led off the ninth and reached on a single, but LSU wasn't able to get him home. Jake Brown and Jared Jones both had some hard hit balls to center, but they went right to Coastal's CF.
Chase Shores remained on the mound in the ninth inning and quickly gave up a lead off single, brining the tying run to the plate. In the next at bat, Shores pounded an elevated fastball by the batter for a strikeout before forcing a double play to end the game and secure the national championship.
For the eighth time in program history, the LSU Tigers are national champions.
A few weeks ago, LSU went down 5-1 to Little Rock in their home regional. Now they're national champions for the second time in three years.
Another season to remember for Tiger faithful across the country.
