Rafael Nadal brought an end to his legendary tennis career in 2024, after competing for Spain in the Davis Cup.
The 22-time Grand Slam champion’s career ended at the hands of Botic van de Zandschulp, who defeated the King of Clay in singles and doubles action.
Tributes poured out from the sporting world for Nadal, who won 92 career titles during his formidable run at the top of tennis for the best part of two decades.
The likes of Roger Federer, Andy Murray, and David Beckham all sent messages to Nadal, the latter of whom made a heartwarming offer to him.
In a social media post, Beckham said: “Rafa, I wanted to send my love and huge congratulations to you for an amazing career.
“Thank you for so many incredible moments and memories as a tennis fan, and for everything that you have done to inspire young people around the world.
Beckham then suggested they could attend a football game together at the Santiago Bernabeu, the home of Real Madrid.
“So, Rafa, the best thing about retirement is that we can now go and watch our beloved Real Madrid together. Hala Madrid!”
Beckham played for Real Madrid between 2003 and 2007, while Nadal is an ardent fan of the Spanish giant.
The sporting world was rocked by Nadal’s retirement and they swarmed social media to celebrate the Spaniard.
“Congratulations on a career that most won’t dare to dream of,” On Instagram, Serena Williams wrote: “I feel so fortunate to have been able to play when you were playing and being great.
Arguably his greatest rival, Roger Federer, also sent an emotional message to the player he met 40 times in the sport.
“Let’s start with the obvious: you beat me – a lot. More than I managed to beat you. You challenged me in ways no one else could.
“On clay, it felt like I was stepping into your backyard, and you made me work harder than I ever thought I could just to hold my ground.
“You made me reimagine my game – even going so far as to change the size of my racquet head, hoping for any edge.”
Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos and many more sporting icons also sent a message to the King of Clay in 2024.
