The perfect RB upgrade for Chiefs may be hiding on Falcons bench

The Chiefs’ final preseason game is in the books, and now the wait is on to see who will make their final 53-man roster. While most of the upcoming decisions for the Chiefs are about who they will cut to get the roster down, they also have to decide if there are any positions where they aren’t happy with their in-house options and need to make an addition. This past week, there were rumors circulating that running back is a position where they might be interested in adding a player.

The Chiefs missed out on trading for Washington’s Brian Robinson when he was dealt to the 49ers for a sixth-round pick. That’s great value for a guy who can provide starting-caliber carries between the tackles. However, with Robinson being limited in the passing game, his fit was questionable for Andy Reid’s pass-heavy offense.

Online, there are plenty of KC fans drooling over the idea of trading for a big-name back like Breece Hall or Kenneth Walker. Both backs have a high upside, are in contract seasons, and their teams have even younger backs on the roster that might prevent them from being re-signed.

However, both of those players would probably cost a much higher draft pick than Robinson went for and would also need to be re-signed to a substantial deal to make giving up that pick worth the investment.

Why Tyler Allgeier is the perfect trade target for the Kansas City Chiefs

There is a potential trade target out there who isn’t as big of a name as Hall or Walker but would still be a significant upgrade at a price much closer to what Robinson went for. That player is Tyler Allgeier from the Atlanta Falcons. Allgeier may not be a star running back, but he’s been great anytime he’s been given a chance to touch the ball and would be a great fit for what KC needs right now.

Allgeier was thrown into action as a rookie and responded with a 1,000-yard season. The Falcons ended up drafting Bijan Robinson the following offseason, and Allgeier was relegated to backup duties the past two seasons.

Still, Allgeier has averaged 4.4 yards per carry on a middling Atlanta offense in his career. He’s also been very reliable catching the ball when given the chance. In his three NFL seasons, he has caught 47 of his 52 targets with zero drops.

Allgeier would also be the most physically strong back on Kansas City's roster. He has a stocky 5’10”, 225-pound frame and is powerful between the tackles. In fact, last season his 85.7 PFF rushing grade was the 12th best in the entire NFL. For comparison, Isiah Pacheco had a 65.2 PFF rushing grade, which ranked 51st.

With two All-Pro-caliber interior offensive linemen in Creed Humphrey and Trey Smith, and their third interior lineman, Kingsley Suamataia, being a strong run blocker, the Chiefs should be much better at running the ball between the tackles than they have been in recent years. It’s time for the Chiefs to stop ignoring the run game, and trading for Tyler Allgeier would be a big step toward improving their rushing attack.

So what do you think, Chiefs fans? Do you like the idea of Brett Veach dealing a mid-to-late-round pick to add Tyler Allgeier to the Chiefs’ running back room? Is there a player you think would be an even better addition? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
