The Yankees didn’t just lose to the Red Sox on Saturday. They were embarrassed. A 12–1 beating at Yankee Stadium left Aaron Boone with little choice but to state the obvious: if this keeps up, the season is going nowhere.

“No, we’re not running out of time,” Boone said. “But if we don’t do better, then it’s going to fizzle out and we’re not going to get to where we want to be.”

He didn’t stop there.

“I mean, it sucks. Yeah, feels real crappy. We got to get past it, like, I mean, like we can sit here and dwell on it. We got to play better. We got to play better against these quality opponents in our division. But we can’t go erase what’s been a really crappy weekend so far for us, other than putting our best foot forward tomorrow and salvaging one and being in control of what we have in front of us and writing the story the rest of the way. But we gotta go do it.”

That’s about as blunt as the normally optimistic Boone gets.

And the standings back him up. The Yankees are now 1-8 against the Red Sox and six games behind the Blue Jays in the American League East. With September around the corner, that’s not a gap you erase by sleepwalking through series against teams above .500.

Saturday was one of those games you crumple up and throw away. Will Warren didn’t make it past the fourth inning, the bats went silent, and the defense caved. It was all over early, and Yankee Stadium had the kind of restless energy that tells you fans know exactly what’s at stake.

The problem is this wasn’t a one-off. The Yankees have been outclassed far too often by contenders, and Boone has admitted as much. The urgency he’s preaching hasn’t shown up on the field.

There’s still time, but less with every wasted night. Boone said it out loud: the Yankees aren’t out of it yet. But unless they start beating good teams now, the season is going to slip away before October even starts.
