'There are other games played outside of Knoxville' — Chipper Jones explains social media digs seen by some as directed at Tennessee Vols baseball
Caitie McMekin/News Sentinel / USA TODAY NETWORK

Most former professional athletes don't venture onto social media and interact with fans. Heck, most current ones don't either.

Former Atlanta Braves legend and Baseball Hall of Fame inductee Chipper Jones is an exception.  Jones has a strong following on Twitter/X and regularly posts his feelings and replies to comments from fans and media regularly.

The ex-Braves third baseman, as it turns out, is not a fan of the, let's say, energetic style of some aspects of college baseball, a style that some have unfairly knocked Tony Vitello and the Tennessee Vols for exhibiting over the last several years. Jones took to Twitter/X this week and complained about the lack of respect for the game, players who taunt others, and coaches who condone it.

Naturally, that drew a good bit of response from fans of several programs, given the attention gained at several different locations across the country for some chirping between teams.  Some fans responded back to Jones, including a Tennessee fan.  Jones replied back with a bit of a spicy comment denying it was UT and saying that "there are other games played outside of Knoxville".

Jones would ultimately go on to explain that he's a "Gator at heart", and that the way that Florida head coach Kevin O'Sullivan handled a situation with the time change bothered him.  O'Sullivan drew national condemnation and had to apologize after seen on video berating local staff at the Conway regional allegedly due to a game time change.

Jones also complained about the trash talking between Georgia and Oklahoma State and between Florida State and Mississippi State, which had a handful of incidents of players yelling at each other. Georgia players also drew backlash from some online for wearing their jerseys largely unbuttoned and open.

What the whole situation has highlighted is that the supposed controversial behavior that many opposing fans have complained about regarding Vitello and his Tennessee Volunteers is not an anomaly.  And it's really not that bad considering what else is going on around the country.  Whether that's a coach berating NCAA tournament staff or calling opposing players offensive names, or a player screaming "f*ck you" to an opponent - like what happened with Arkansas pitcher Will McEntire to Cannon Peebles last month - very questionable behavior happens across college baseball.

Perhaps folks will direct their ire beyond Knoxville now.  Like a very prominent former baseball star is doing.
