In the mood for cool tools? Craftsman sent us its VERSASTACK™ 262 pc. 3-Drawer Mechanic Tool Set to test-drive its newest low-profile ratchets. As people who use a wide range of tools for work and for play, we know what we like. When you're considering what essential tools you need to have in your tool kit, don't overlook the design of your socket set. From automotive projects to household repairs, having a wide variety of high-quality tools makes every job easier, especially if you're working in tight spots or hard-to-reach places.

“Our new line of low-profile ratchets bring improved access to jobs that homeowners, DIYers, and auto-enthusiasts alike will appreciate," shared Katie Ralston, Senior Product Manager, CRAFTSMAN. "We’ve designed these new and improved ratchets with an up to 25% thinner head* as compared to the previous 72-tooth Craftsman ratchets, to help users get the job done in the tightest of spaces. From mounting a TV to lawn mower maintenance tasks, to a car battery replacement or oil change, Craftsman low-profile ratchets were developed to tackle a wide range of jobs. Incorporated into our core range of mechanics tool sets, users can now find the assortment of individual sockets, wrenches, and accessories they need along with the addition of low-profile ratchets.” *1/4” DR and 3/8” DR Only As Compared To CMMT81747, CMMT81748, & CMMT81749

CRAFTSMAN low-profile ratchets are available in CRAFTSMAN VERSASTACK™ mechanics tool kit, mixed mechanics tool sets, and as standalone items in stores and online where CRAFTSMAN products are sold.

9 Features We Liked About This Set

  1. Low profile. If you've worked in tight quarters, you'll understand how much easier it is to have a smaller tool.
  2. 72-tooth ratchets with 5° arc swings. Yes, other sets in the Craftsman lineup feature this, but having 72 teeth and a low-profile head is an amazing upgrade. You don’t have to rotate the wrench as far to tighten or loosen, and if you've ever had to work in tight spaces or at an awkward position, you'll understand how nice it is to make progress even when your movements are minimal.
  3. Secure fit. The 1/4” bits click in tight to the 1/4" drive handle. It might seem obvious that the bit should attach to the handle, but in other sets we've used, sometimes they're loose, and other times they don't attach at all; the last thing you need when you’re on a ladder or reaching underneath your lawnmower is to continuously drop bits. Two thumbs up for a secure fit.
  4. A variety of midget wrenches. Craftsman's mechanic tool kit has tiny wrenches in 16 small sizes. Sometimes the job doesn't need a ratchet, or you need a smaller selection of tools to fit in a tight place. These wrenches come to the rescue.
  5. The pieces don’t snap into the drawers. Okay, okay, this can be good and bad, but hear us out. It's only bad if the drawer tips and everything falls out. It's good because I don’t particularly appreciate wrestling for specialized tools when they're secured, snapped into a molded plastic clip. I like being able to grab what I need without resistance.
  6. 1/4”, 3/8”, and 1/2” drives. A drawer for each!
  7. Removable drawers. Depending on the job, I can connect the drawer I need on top of the set or bring it with me where I’m working. Also, I could remove the drawers I know I don’t need and leave the additional tools in the tool box behind to lighten the set for transport.
  8. Specialty bits in 1/4" drive. The set has star bits, hex bits, and square bits. It's nice to have a set that includes the random bits I feel like I’m always looking for and can never find.
  9. Lifetime warranty. We love Craftsman tools for this perk. These are high-quality tools and they know it.

Remember: You can also buy one-off ratchets and smaller sets of drivers. You don't always need to buy the biggest set they sell (a basic tool set is a good start), but it sure is handy to have a variety of tools at your fingertips if you're doing automotive repairs or looking to expand your range of sockets.
