Tigers President Sends Gleyber Torres Message After Contract Report Surfaces

Detroit Tigers second baseman Gleyber Torres is in his eighth MLB season, but first outside of The Bronx. Spending the first seven years of his career with the New York Yankees, Torres signed a one-year, $15 million contract to join Detroit this past offseason.

In 115 games for the first-place Tigers, Torres has posted an 111 OPS+ while carrying a career-high .360 on-base percentage. These numbers helped earn Torres his third career All-Star selection, and are a big reason why Detroit owns a 10.5 game lead in the American League Central — the biggest division lead in in baseball entering Saturday.

While Torres and the Tigers are focused on making a deep postseason run in October, his uncertain future looms over the team. Set to enter free agency after the 2025 season concludes, Torres is predicted to command a multi-year deal — perhaps outside of Detroit.

Scott Harris Makes Gleyber Torres Comments Following Free Agency Update

Earlier this month, a report from MLB.com detailed the difficulty Detroit could face when attempting to retain Torres this upcoming winter.

"He appears to be a good long-term fit for the first-place Tigers, but he’s likely to seek a multiyear contract that probably won’t be cheap," the report read. "Plenty of other clubs could use a good second baseman, so it won’t be easy for the Tigers to keep Torres, but they’ll probably try."

Just over one week after this report, Tigers President of Baseball Operations Scott Harris spoke with Jim Bowden of The Athletic about Torres. While it could be challenging for Detroit to retain its All-Star second baseman, Harris made it clear how the organization feels about him.

"Gleyber sets the tone for our lineup every night," Harris said. "His at-bat quality has become contagious on this team."

Harris' quote on Torres is backed by statistical data. Among qualified AL second baseman, Torres ranks first in on-base percentage, second in runs scored, and fourth in runs batted in. This production out of the two-hole, where Torres has started 92 of his 115 games, is largely why Detroit enters Saturday fourth in the AL in runs scored.

While he is subpar defensively, ranking 31st among all second baseman in Statcast's Outs Above Average metric (via Baseball Savant), Torres' offensive ability has him in line for a multi-year free agency agreement. Reports suggest that could come outside of Detroit, but if the team president's comments are any indication, the Tigers will do all they can to re-sign their second baseman.
