Tony Petitti probably wasn’t expecting a clapback from the Big 12 when he took the podium at Big Ten Media Days, but the league’s social team was ready the moment his quote hit the timeline.
“If you’re 6-3 in the Big Ten, I would argue that’s a good record,” Petitti said, according to On3’s Brett McMurphy. “If you stumble in the non-conference, I don’t know why that would disqualify you [from playoff contention].”
The comment raised eyebrows, mostly because it mirrored Iowa’s exact 2023 scenario. The Hawkeyes finished 6-3 in the Big Ten and lost to in-state rival Iowa State in the Cy-Hawk game. They were never seriously in the playoff discussion.
That’s when the Big 12 hit send.

The league’s official Twitter account quote-tweeted the post with a photo of Iowa State players celebrating their win over Iowa, paired with the caption: “A 6-3 team stumbling in the non-conference.” It was a direct and devastating response, reminding everyone that scoreboard still matters, especially when your commissioner is making arguments for playoff inclusion.
While the Big Ten continues to posture around strength of schedule and league depth, the Big 12 reminded fans and media that on-field results speak louder. Iowa State earned that win last fall. And now, they’re getting even more mileage out of it.
As playoff debates heat up with the expanded format on the horizon, expect this kind of conference-level back-and-forth to become more common. And in this round, the Big 12 walked away with the cleanest shot of the week.
