Cristian Romero recently signed a new contract extension at Tottenham until 2029

Tottenham defender Cristian Romero already etched his name in the club’s history books last season. The Argentina international managed to play a crucial part in helping the Lilywhites win the Europa League in May, ending the 17-year trophy drought that the North London club endured. And winning the historic competition also meant that the 27-year-old became a Spurs legend in the eyes of many.

However, this summer was filled with transfer rumours linking Romero away from the club. The ex-Atalanta star was heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid for months after he admitted that he wanted to play in Spain. It was reported earlier in the summer that Diego Simeone ‘called’ Romero every day to lure him to the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

But the deal eventually fell through as Atleti could not match the valuation set by Spurs for Romero. And to put the cherry on top of the cake, the Argentine also signed a contract extension at N17 out of nowhere earlier this month. The news broke out after the 27-year-old was made club captain for this season by Thomas Frank just days prior to the new contract announcement.

Tottenham extending Cristian Romero’s contract is as good as a new signing

There should be no doubts that Cristian Romero always tends to give his all for Tottenham while he is out there on the pitch. The Argentina international wears his heart on his sleeve, and he is a born-winner. His determination to lead from the front is often admired by the Spurs faithful whenever he dons the Lilywhite jersey. And it is clear to see that the players also look up to him when the going gets tough.

Now, John Wenham has praised Spurs after the club managed to secure a new deal for Romero. Speaking to Tottenham News, Wenham said,

“I genuinely believe it’s bigger than any signing we could make. He lost his manager. It’s obvious he was close to Postecoglou, won a trophy with him last year. But the fact that he was made the captain, I think, very quickly shows he feels at home at Tottenham.”

The Lilywhite Rose owner added,

“For me, it’s the biggest contract renewal they’ve done since Son extended in 2021 in terms of getting an absolute key world-class player in the prime years of their career to come, renew and renew long term till 2029.”

John Wenham believes extending Cristian Romero’s contract is the best signing the club has made in the summer. The Lilywhite Rose owner suggests that Romero is feeling at home at N17 after he was made club captain by Thomas Frank earlier this month. And Wenham also admits that Spurs extending Romero’s contract might just be the ‘biggest renewal’ the North London club have managed to do in recent years, as the player is still in his prime years.

One can also say that Romero extending his Spurs contract means that Thomas Frank’s project has some promise and the Argentine believes he can be a vital part of it. The 27-year-old has clearly indicated that he wants to win more titles at N17 while leading the club from the front. And this can only be music to the ears of Tottenham fans.
