Tottenham Hotspur have started the Premier League campaign in style, proving doubters wrong and showing resilience despite transfer market frustrations.
The big disappointment of the week came when Crystal Palace playmaker Eberechi Eze, long targeted by Spurs as the ideal No.10 replacement for the injured James Maddison, ended up signing for Arsenal instead. Spurs had a deal agreed in principle, only for the Gunners to swoop in late and secure the England international.
Missing out on Eze was painful enough; watching him hold up the red shirt across North London only deepened the sting. Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville admitted the situation was “a little embarrassing” for Spurs, calling it “a bad one” to lose such a key target to their fiercest rivals.
But rather than dwell on disappointment, Thomas Frank’s side delivered the perfect response. Spurs went to the Etihad and earned a superb 2-0 win over Manchester City, following up on their opening-day thrashing of Burnley.
Gary Neville, speaking after the victory, praised Frank’s adaptability and the way the players have bought into his approach so quickly. Speaking to NBC Sports (h/t TBR Football), here is what he said:
“It was a little embarrassing for them in midweek, losing Eze to Arsenal, that was a bad one for them, but they recovered really well to get a great result. He’s started well, and the players seem to be thriving under him.”
Frank has already shown tactical flexibility, setting Spurs up differently across games against PSG, Burnley, and City. That adaptability has been missing in North London for too long, and fans are enjoying watching a side that can both press with intensity and defend with grit.
While missing out on Eze hurts, Spurs still have time to act in the market. The club remain determined to bring in a creative midfielder before the September 1st deadline. Names like Savinho, Rodrygo, and Bilal El Khannouss have been linked, and Daniel Levy is expected to back Frank with further reinforcements.
For now, though, Spurs supporters can take huge pride in the way the squad have responded. Two games in, two wins, and no goals conceded, Tottenham are making headlines for all the right reasons again.
