‘Toxic Avenger’ Trailer Brings Retro Vibes Just Before Release

Countless unique superheroes have appeared throughout the various forms of popular media. We’ve seen flying super-strong men, women wielding magical lassos, and kids transforming into aliens. But one character who doesn’t get a lot of attention is the Toxic Avenger.

This intriguing mutated do-gooder made his debut in the early ’80s. And has appeared in movies, animated shows, and comic books since then. He’s now making a return to the big screen with a brand-new reboot film. But would you believe a special retro-styled trailer came to give us one last preview?

The Mutated Superhero of Tromaville

The Toxic Avenger was once Melvin Junko, a janitor at a health club in Tromaville. He was also the favorite target of the club’s bullying regulars. But Melvin’s life soon changed following a prank concocted by his tormentors. He ended up falling into toxic waste and mutating into a grotesque monstrosity. Afterward, he became a brutal crimefighter and a defender of the innocent and downtrodden.

Created by Lloyd Kaufman, the monstrous do-gooder debuted in the 1984 movie, The Toxic Avenger. He, afterward, starred in sequels that sparked the creation of a franchise. And became featured in an early ’90s stand-alone comic series published by Marvel. Toxie even took the spotlight in a kid-friendly cartoon, two independent musicals, and film novels. Over time, the mutated superhero faded into obscurity but was kept alive by his creator.
