Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs were not in action on Monday night. However, the four-time All-Pro tight end still found his name dragged into the broadcast of the “Monday Night Football” matchup between the Las Vegas Raiders and the Dallas Cowboys.
Travis Kelce’s brother, Jason Kelce, was at Allegiant Stadium as part of ESPN’s broadcast team. Before the game, the legendary center spoke with Raiders quarterback Geno Smith. Their conversation led to how Smith crossed paths with the Chiefs TE way before they were stars in the NFL.
Travis Kelce played quarterback in high school at Cleveland Heights. This carried over to his time at the University of Cincinnati, where he teamed up with Jason Kelce. Travis Kelce initially played both QB and TE with the Bearcats before fully embracing the tight end position in his final two years in college.
As it turns out, Smith played a pivotal role in Travis Kelce’s shift from QB to TE. Jason Kelce revealed during Monday’s interview that Smith outshone his brother at West Virginia University.
“You ruined Trav’s chance of ever playing quarterback for West Virginia by showing them up at that recruiting camp,” Jason Kelce told Smith.
Travis Kelce never went to West Virginia. Based on Jason Kelce’s statement, the reason behind this is that Smith, who represented the Mountaineers for four years, proved to be the superior quarterback during recruiting camp.
Smith claimed that he wasn’t aware of this turn of events. Still, it prompted an apology from the Raiders star.
“I had no idea,” Smith said. “My bad, Trav. My bad, bro. … But hey, it worked out.”
As Smith said, though, Travis Kelce at tight end worked out very well. On Sunday, in Kansas City’s disappointing 22-19 loss to the Denver Broncos, the 10-time Pro Bowler scored his 84th career touchdown to become the all-time leader in Chiefs franchise history.
As for Smith, the former Comeback Player of the Year winner registered 27-of-42 completed passes against the Cowboys for 238 yards, one touchdown and one interception. The Raiders lost, 16-33, falling to 2-8 on the season.
