While it has become a trend for schools to sell advertising space on their fields to make additional money, uniforms have remained untouched. However, that is something that is likely to change in the coming years. As school’s await NCAA approval to allow advertising on jerseys, one SEC athletic director was asked earlier today if that was a possibility at his school.
Asked by InsideTexas, the Longhorns’ fan site for On3Sports, Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte did not mince words with his answer. It is safe to assume that Texas wouldn’t have any difficulty finding willing companies to advertise on their uniforms, with Dell, Whole Foods and VRBO all based in the Austin area.
It is a unique change of pace, considering schools like Clemson and most notably LSU have been very open with their hope of adding advertising to their uniforms. And the thought is that once it is approved by the NCAA, most FBS programs will use this option to create additional revenue.
It should also be said that not many schools have the financial capabilities of Texas. So, while Texas is able to reject the idea, for many schools it will be an option that they won’t and can’t turn down.
