After the preseason finale on Friday against the Atlanta Falcons, roster decisions now face Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer. Getting down to 53 players is never an easy task. Especially when you have guys working their way back from long-term injuries.
One of those is cornerback Trevon Diggs, after missing most of 2024 due to a knee injury. A positive update was provided on Saturday, reportedly tending toward starting on the roster. PUP was an option, meaning some games would be missed by requirement. Instead, Diggs has a chance to get back on the field sooner rather than later.
“The expectation is that Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs (knee) will start the season on the 53-man roster,” Jon Machota of The Athletic said via X. “A good sign considering the knee injury he’s working back from.”
Diggs played in 11 games last season after previously only getting two appearances. Knee injuries have been the issue on both occasions. Folks inside the Cowboys organization, specifically Jerry Jones, has not been too happy with how the rehab process played out.
The beginning of training camp began with news of Diggs’ pay getting docked by around $500,000. He did not meet contractual requirements for working out inside the facility on a frequent enough basis. Diggs has voiced his displeasure with the decision.
“I didn’t expect that,” Diggs said via The Athletic’s Jon Machota. “It kind of hurt my feelings. It’s OK, though, hopefully I make it back in incentives.”
Those incentives will come by getting onto the field. Starting the year on PUP would mean Diggs misses the first four games of the regular season. The Cowboys must feel confident in getting him back by Week 4 against the Green Bay Packers, if not sooner.
Where he stands for the opener against the Philadelphia Eagles, no official decision has been made. Less than two weeks separate us from then and now, scheduled to kick off on Sept. 4. One week later will be the Cowboys’ first game inside AT&T Stadium for the year, getting another NFC East game against the New York Football Giants.
Given how talented of receivers are on Philadelphia’s roster, somebody like Diggs might be a welcome presence. The Cowboys still have cornerback questions coming out of training camp, even if everybody is considered healthy. Diggs, a former All-Pro, needs to be somebody who plays up to the big contract.
