Ty Simpson is in a solid position to become Alabama’s next starting quarterback, and he’s no stranger to competition.
In 2023, Jalen Milroe beat out Simpson to win the starting job and played two seasons, only missing the South Florida game due to then-head coach Nick Saban benching Milroe to see what the other quarterbacks could bring to the table.
After an abysmal showing from Tyler Buchner, Simpson got his chance, and he led two touchdown drives that ultimately helped Alabama win 17-3. Milroe returned to the starting role the week after, and he led the Tide to an SEC Championship victory and College Football Playoff appearance.
In the midst of a quarterback battle with Austin Mack and Keelon Russell, Simpson is attending the Manning Passing Academy.
Simpson shared what he learned from watching Jalen Milroe for the last two seasons while talking with reporters.
“I learned a lot from Jalen,” Simpson said. “He’s one of the guys — best I’ve ever seen take care of his body. He was always in there at five in the morning, taking care of his body in the cold tub and getting treatment. That’s something I’ve kind of taken now, as the oldest guy in the room, getting there first and making sure I take care of my body so I can be able to perform on Saturdays and be able to be the best guy I can be.”
Another one of Simpson’s biggest takeaways was how tough and athletic Milroe was on the gridiron as the Tide’s starting quarterback.
“Jalen is a tough dude, man,” Simpson said Friday at the Manning Passing Academy. “I saw some hits on the sideline, and I was like, ‘I don’t know how he got up from that.’ Just how athletic and how freakish he was. Not only that but being able to beat defenses with his legs but also making defenses stay true to their zone tendencies and be able to throw it over their head.”
